Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau could announce his resignation as leader of the Liberal Party on Monday, according to information reported on Sunday by the daily The Globe and Mail.
Although the exact timing of the announcement is not yet clear, sources close to the matter reportedly told the Globe and Mail that Mr. Trudeau might want to precede the caucus meeting scheduled for Wednesday, thus avoiding the impression of a forced expulsion by his MPs.
Remember that the latter is facing internal discontent from his caucus, which has notably intensified since the surprise departure of Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland in mid-December.
Add to this more than unfavorable polls which predict a massive defeat against Pierre Poilievre’s conservatives.
According to the latest Angus Reid poll published last Tuesday, the Liberal Party of Canada’s (PLC) voting intentions plunged to 16%, the political party’s lowest result since 2014.
Among Liberal voters, 59% believe that the Prime Minister should immediately leave his post as Liberal leader. Two in five Canadians also believe that Justin Trudeau should call a general election as soon as he returns from vacation.
