Gradually, the subject of cryptocurrencies is gaining ground in the political sphere. There is no doubt that the election of Donald Trump for a second term brings new lease of life for the ecosystemthis resulting from multiple declarations in favor of a strategic bitcoin reserve. Since the United States has a leading position, this explains the similar position taken by certain cities and countries across the globe.

Canadian cities, gradually pro-crypto

A few weeks earlier, in December, the city of Vancouver made a first step into the crypto industry. Indeed, the city’s Municipal Council adopted a motion which aims to explore the advantages that could result from the integration of bitcoin into treasury.

The city’s mayor, Ken Sim, has for several years adopted a very favorable position for cryptocurrencies. His desire is clear: to make Vancouver a city “Bitcoin-friendly“. This dynamic which is taking place across Canadian cities seems to take place in the highest political classes in the country.

A pro-bitcoin Canadian prime minister in power?

After nine years in power, Justin Trudeau announced his resignation. During his speech on Monday January 6 in Ottawa, he affirmed that

“I intend to resign as party leader and prime minister once the party chooses its next leader”

Taking his departure in a unfavorable context towards himwith a popularity rating at its lowest, it will be appropriate to wait a few months before witnessing the arrival in power of a new political figure. These elections will take place no later than October 20, 2025.

Pierre Poilievre is currently in top of the list on Polymarket to be the future Prime Minister of Canada, up to 89%. A communications consultant, he now works as a Canadian politician, driven by the convictions of the country’s Conservative Party. Facing him, recognized political figures, notably Chrystia Freeland, former prime ministervying to be leader of the Liberal Party.

The enthusiasm of recent hours on the part of the crypto ecosystem results from the pro-bitcoin position of Pierre Poilievre for several years. Having strongly opposed CBDC plans, he also came out in support of the industry by participating in Robert Breedlove’s podcast “The way of Freedom“.

Speculation about the next minister has therefore strongly exploded upwards following the announcement of Trudeau’s resignation. This dynamic is expected to remain stable throughout the early election process.

A year 2025 which risks being eventful

Concretely, these first days are particularly rich in news as for the actions that certain deputies are taking with the aim of involving the subject of cryptocurrencies, and in particular bitcoin, in the highest political spheres. For example, in Chile, deputies are considering the creation of a bitcoin committee for the establishment of a strategic reserve.

The American continent is clearly in turmoil, but for all that, Europe is not completely excluded from the subject. MEP Sarah Knafo recently spoke on the subject at the European Commission, on the need to focus on freedom with bitcoin. Further east, Vladimir Putin himself describes bitcoin as an alternative payment tool and that no one can prohibit its use.

Concretely, the dynamics observed in Canada are very interesting and could intensify as we move forward in the electoral processbut more generally, it is the world which is making a 180-degree turn in the position adopted towards the industry. From now on, it remains to be seen whether the pro-crypto candidate will maintain the current position in the polls as well as in decentralized betting, and whether he will emerge victorious from this new stage in Canadian political history.
