The National Weather Service (NWS) warned the population of the risk of ice, snow and strong winds as well as temperatures sometimes reaching minus 25 ° C. Severe thunderstorms, hail and tornadoes are also expected in the Mississippi Valley.

    • State of emergency declared

Several states, including Missouri, Virginia and Arkansas, have declared states of emergency due to increased risks of power outages, impassable roads and falling trees. Part of one of the major interstate highways (I-70) has been closed, and flights are temporarily suspended at Kansas City International Airport.

Authorities are particularly concerned about freezing rain, which could disrupt road traffic and cause power outages. These would deprive many residents of heating during this period of extreme cold.
