Mathias Acuna, a Uruguayan striker playing in Ecuador, was found dead in his hotel room.
Uruguayan striker Mathias Acuna, who played for Ecuadorian first division club Mushuc Runa, died on Saturday in Ambato at the age of 32, apparently following a suicide, the club announced.
“We offer our condolences on the death of Mathias Acuna“, declared the club on the social network X.
Luis Chango, the president of this team based in Ambato in the center of the Andes, which is preparing to participate in the annual professional tournament which will begin in February, indicated to the Primicias website that Mathias Acuna would have committed suicide in a hotel in this town located in 112 km south of the capital Quito.
“As an institution, we will provide all our support for the body repatriation procedures. All members of Mushuc Runa are dismayed by this situation“, affirmed the leader.
The Uruguayan Football Federation (AUF) for its part said:deeply saddened by the death“by Mathias Acuna.”We extend our condolences to his family, teammates and friends.“, she announced on X.
Acuna returned to Ecuador on Friday to prepare with his team for the upcoming season. Arriving in the middle of last year from Greek club Lamia, he was due to play in the Copa Sudamericana in 2025.
In his country, he played for clubs like CA Fénix and Montevideo Wanderers.
In December, the player indicated on social media that the Uruguayan justice system had ordered him to wear an electronic bracelet while he was under investigation for accusation of mistreatment towards his former partner.
