A 54-year-old woman was stabbed to death on Saturday evening in southern New Caledonia.
Her partner was arrested.
A woman was stabbed to death on Saturday evening in the south of New Caledonia, the prosecution said in a press release on Sunday. The events took place in the Unia tribe (commune of Yaté), in the far south of Grande Terre, around 11 p.m. on Saturday.
According to the first elements of the investigation, the victim, aged 54, was stabbed in the thigh during an argument and the blade then perforated the femoral artery. The spouse then left the marital home before being found by relatives, who took him to the gendarmerie.
The man, aged 52, heavily intoxicated, could not be immediately taken into custody, said the Nouméa public prosecutor. He was to be heard when he left the sobering-up cell. The prosecution opened an investigation into intentional homicide by a spouse and an autopsy was ordered.
In 2023, 96 women were victims of femicide in France, a figure down 19% compared to 2022, according to the latest report from the Ministry of the Interior published at the end of November.
