a respiratory epidemic that is overflowing hospitals in China

A new virus, HMPV, is causing concern around the world. Five years after the COVID-19 pandemic, this respiratory threat, which is increasing sharply, particularly among young people in China, could well redefine our relationship with public health and health security.

The year 2020 will be remembered for the pandemic caused by the COVID-19 virus. Nearly five years later, a new threat is looming on the horizon: HMPV.

HMPV, or Human Metapneumovirus, is a respiratory virus belonging to the Paramyxoviridae family. First identified in 2001, it is linked to respiratory infections, particularly in children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.

Like the COVID-19 virus, HMPV is spread primarily through respiratory droplets (coughs, sneezes) or contact with contaminated surfaces.

According to a Reuters press release…

Recently detected cases include pathogens such as rhinovirus and human metapneumovirus, with an increasing trend in human metapneumovirus cases among people under 14 years of age, particularly in the northern provinces of China.

The report describes a critical state in China, but it is important to note that Chinese authorities and the WHO have not yet declared an emergency.

The virus has already spread significantly in other countries, such as Indonesia. HMPV is a seasonal virus, with increased incidence during winter and early spring. Clinically, it is similar to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Symptoms can range from mild to severe and include:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Congestion nasale
  • Shortness of breath
  • In more severe cases, it can lead to pneumonia or bronchiolitis.
