American screenwriter and director Jeff Baena, 47, was found dead on January 3 at his home in Los Angeles. The police report indicates that it was a suicide. Born in Miami, raised in South Florida, Jeff Baena studied cinema at New York University before becoming Robert Zemeckis’ production assistant.
The best-known title in his filmography is the screenplay for J’adore Huckabees in 2004, co-written with director David O. Russell, existential comedy with Jason Schwartzman, Dustin Hoffman, Isabelle Huppert, Mark Wahlberg… He had also collaborated on several occasions with the actress Aubrey Plaza, his partner since 2011, his wife since 2020 (Life After Beth, the Good Sisters, Bachelor Party…) Jeff Baena also wrote, directed and produced a series for Showtime called Cinema Toast where sequences from cinema classics were reviewed and corrected by contemporary filmmakers and actors. The Sundance independent film festival where he presented several of his films released a press release: “We sincerely thank Jeff Baena for sharing his stories and contributing to the lasting memories we have built together.
