Philippe Clement, from heaven to hell with the Rangers

With a convincing victory against Celtic, Philippe Clement seemed to have saved his skin as Rangers manager. But another painful misstep occurred on Sunday. On the field of Hibernian, a mid-table club, a double advantage was wasted: 3-3.

After making a splash in Belgium with KRC Genk and Club Bruges, Clement embarked on his first coaching adventure abroad at the start of 2022. But his time at AS Monaco was mixed. After only a season and a half, he left the Principality. A few months later, he joined the Rangers.

Victory needed in the Old Firm

There, Clement got off to a great start. In the end, if his team had to recognize the superiority of its great green and white rival, the coach’s contract was still extended just before the start of this season. But once again, it is Celtic who largely dominate the Scottish championship and who were the strongest in the League Cup final.

Criticisms against the coach were already beginning to be heard. And after embarrassing 1 in 6 draws against St Mirren and Motherwell, speculation was rife about a possible sacking. On Thursday, however, the coach seemed to save his skin by winning a convincing victory (3-0) against the leader and great rival, Celtic.

New disappointment

But this improvement did not last long, because on Sunday, things got out of hand again. However, the match at Hibernian, seventh in the standings, got off to a flying start. After less than 20 minutes, Hamza Igamane had already given his team a double lead. But after an hour of play, the locals had already equalized. With his third goal of the afternoon, Igamane gave the visitors the lead again. But in the 83rd minute, Rocky Bushiri (ex-Mechelen) increased the score to 3-3, the final score. This misstep allows Celtic to regain a 13-point lead over Rangers. Clement’s seat therefore continues to wobble.
