The film “The Count of Monte Cristo” has already exceeded one million admissions, boosted by the Cinema Festival.

CINEMA – Armed duels, sword fights, stories of love, but also of betrayal… This Friday, January 3, the 2nd most seen French film in cinemas in 2024, Le Comte de Monte Cristo with Pierre Niney, arrives on Canal+. An adventure film that keeps its promises of great family entertainment.

The story that its two directors, Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre De La Patellière, tell us is faithful to the novel by Alexandre Dumas from 1846. It tells the epic story of Edmond Dantès who, after escaping from the Château d'If where he had been wrongly locked up on his wedding day, poses as various characters in order to take revenge on the men who tried to eliminate him.

The 2024 version of Comte de Monte Cristo is impressive, largely thanks to Pierre Niney, who takes over from Gérard Depardieu and Jean Marais in the role of the many-faced hero. But he is not the only one to break the screen. Joined in the cast by several big stars, such as Anaïs Demoustier, Bastien Bouillon and Laurent Laffite, the actor is supported by two other lesser-known, but very convincing, names.

Anamaria Vartolomei and Julien De Saint-Jean in “The Count of Monte Cristo”

The first is Anamaria Vartolomei. The 25-year-old actress, who won the César for Most Promising Actress in 2022 for her role in The Event by Audrey Diwan, plays Haydée, this young woman whom Edmond Dantès rescued from slavery after the murder of her parents by Fernand de Morcef.

Haydée, whom she plays, speaks French with a Balkan accent (Anamaria Vartolomei is herself from Romania). She is a very wise woman and a great seductress, whose songs will bewitch – and this is the aim of her mission – Albert, the son of the man who killed his parents.

Le Comte de Monte Cristo carton au box-office

As for the second, it is Julien de Saint-Jean, Haydée's partner, Andrea Cavalcanti. A character fabricated from scratch by Edmond Dantès, he is Villefort's son, born from his adultery with Madame de Nargonne. He has a dark look, but is very popular with these gentlemen who see in this supposed rich heir a good friend to count on.

The dark truth that he has been hiding until then will eventually come to light, during a dazzling monologue in court which not only keeps the audience in suspense, but also the spectators of the film.

The latter is not his first role. He has already been seen in several films, including Stop with your lies by Olivier Peyon. Anamaria Vartolomei has a career that is taking off. Awarded a César for her performance in the adaptation of Annie Ernaux's book, she recently made an impression in Mariaa sensitive film about the broken destiny of actress Maria Schneider and will be featured in the series Merteuil on Max.

Since its theatrical release in June 2024, Le Comte de Monte Cristo achieved more than 9.3 million entries, thus becoming, behind A little something extra by Artus, one of the architects of the very good figures for French cinema in 2024. An impressive score coupled with rave reviews from around the world. Le Comte de Monte Cristois therefore to be discovered, or rewatched, from this Friday January 3 on Canal+ and myCANAL.
