Brigitte Bardot denounces a “massacre” of chamois

Brigitte Bardot spoke this Tuesday to denounce the “massacre” of chamois in the , targeted by a hunting plan.

The star's fight for animals continues. Brigitte Bardot denounced this Tuesday, December 31, a “massacre” of chamois in Doubs, where the prefect authorized the slaughter of 594 animals, in the name of protecting vegetation. “I learn with horror that the Doubs hunting plan, in progress until January 29, 2025, authorizes the harvest of nearly 600 chamois,” writes the former actress in an open letter to prefect Rémi Bastille.

“Nothing ever stops the hunters and the State delights, in mediocre clientelism, in sacrificing the living on the altar of the particular interests of hunters who still dare to dress themselves as protectors of biodiversity,” accuses the star. “You cannot and must not condone and be complicit in such a massacre.”

Prevention of forest damage

In a decree dated August 21, the prefect of Doubs set the hunting plan for the 2024-2025 season at a range of 259 to 594 chamois. The same decree concerning deer sets their harvest between 72 and 209 animals. In a presentation note, state services justified this decree in July by preventing forest damage committed by the two species on young trees.

The prefectural decision alarmed animal rights associations. An online petition from the Humanimo association had collected more than 62,000 signatures on Tuesday. “We can only be surprised because at the same time, the killing of wolves is very widely practiced and its eradication is even claimed by some,” denounces the association.
