Australian wild card Kimberly Birrell reached the round of 16 of the Brisbane tournament, winning two sets to zero (7-5, 7-5) against American Emma Navarro (photo), seeded No. 2, Wednesday at the Queensland Tennis Center in Brisbane. The 8th player in the world is not off to a perfect start to her first season in the top 10, and will have to raise the level of play in around ten days in Melbourne for the Australian Open.
Birrell, 113th WTA player in the world, will face Russian Anastasia Potapova in the round of 16 of the Brisbane Open. The latter won 7-5, 6-4 against the number 16 seed, Dayana Yastremska.
The Australian tennis player had eliminated qualifier Priscilla Hon (3-6, 7-5, 6-2), before this duel on Wednesday morning against Navarro, 8th in the world at the WTA.
