On an evening like December 31, they live up to their name: the village halls. They are stocked up for New Year’s Eve, but are also in high demand for other events. A real public service, when compared with the rental rate for a private room.

Kevin Doman’s very large family has gotten into the habit of spending New Year’s Eve in a municipal hall in Saint-Brice-sous-Forêt (Val d’Oise). “There are about 180 of us, we are a big family and we want to celebrate this together”he explains. Like last year, he planned twelve months in advance to be sure of having this municipal village hall. It was the price that decided it: 1,200 euros for two days all inclusive.

The municipality has three rooms of different sizes to rent to individuals. For the town hall, the objective is not to make money but to cover its costs. In Bandol (), where rooms are in high demand, the mayor is going to have a new room built on an old football field. It won’t just be used for partying: Carole, a yoga teacher, intends to make it a work tool. You will have to wait until 2026 to benefit from these new services.
