Tennis: Gabriela Dabrowski, medalist at the Paris Olympics, reveals that she suffered from breast cancer this season

Gabriela Dabrowski (32) announced in a long Instagram post published this Tuesday that she had suffered breast cancer this season: “How can something so small pose such a big problem? That's the question I asked myself when I was diagnosed with breast cancer in mid-April. I'm fine and I'm going to be fine. Early detections save lives. »

She explains that she felt a mass in her breast in 2023, but her doctor tells her not to worry. Then, as the mass grows in 2024, the verdict comes in: it's cancer. “These are words that we are never ready to hear and which, in an instant, turn your life or that of a loved one upside down,” writes the player. The player then began radiotherapy and underwent two operations.

Gabriela Dabrowski therefore decides to juggle between her treatment and her training, which she does not stop. She had to schedule treatment breaks to participate in certain world tournaments such as Wimbledon or the Olympic Games where she obtained a bronze medal in the mixed doubles tournament, with her compatriot Félix Auger-Aliassime. In her Instagram post, she explains that “it all seems surreal today.”

She wants to share her experience and raise awareness about self-diagnosis. Gabriela Dabrowski concludes: “I now find it much easier to feel joy in certain aspects of my life that I previously perceived as a heavy burden. To cancer, I say: fuck you but also thank you. »
