Stankovic saves the success in the festival of impossible goals, Pavoletti is not enough

Top and flop: the best goalkeeper on the pitch, Zampano and Sverko save Di Francesco. Pavoletti reignites the match but it's not enough to find the equalizer

After almost two months Venezia returns to success. Beaten Cagliari 2-1 in the survival clash, but what an effort. Spectacular challenge at the Penzo between goals with daring actions, goals surprisingly disallowed by VAR and sensational saves until the last second. Opens the markings Zampano in the 37th minute: comes into the area behind Augello and takes advantage of an assist from Oristanio. In the second half Venezia upped the pace and found two goals, one (beautiful) however canceled out by the former Oristanio for millimetric offside of Pohjanpalo, the other (masterful) to 67′ with Sverko who scores the double with a personal action with which he takes out the entire opposing defense. Cagliari returns to the game, but only towards the end of the match, with a header by Pavoletti who in the 76th minute closed the gap, rekindling hopes of regaining the equalizer. Stankovic remains a bulwark and, towards the end of the match, saves the result 3-4 times. Venezia rises to 13 points; the Sardinians, however, remain anchored in third-last place with 14 points in Serie A.

Venice-Cagliari, the tactical key to the match

Di Francesco fields the Venice with the 3-4-2-1 but he had to give up Svoboda, Duncan, Sagrado and Raimondo due to injury. For this match he confirms the team as a whole, which forced Juventus to a draw in the last round of the championship, replacing only the unavailable Svoboda and starting from the first minute Altar in the defense 3. Zampano is the only one warned.

Il Cagliari, on the other hand, lines up with 3-5-1-1. Not having Zito Luvumbo available, who suffered a sprained left ankle, coach Davide Nicola identified Gaetano as the alternative to give a starting shirt. This is the only change compared to the defeat suffered at the Unipo Domus against Gasperini's Atalanta. Razvan Marin is the only player on the squad who has been warned by a booking.

Both teams defend narrowly through the central streets but leave too much space on the flanks: Venezia takes advantage of this the most and takes advantage of the speed of Oristanio to pierce the Sardinian defense.

The tops and flops of Venezia

  • Stankovic 8.5. He sacrifices himself at the end on Lapadula who, from a close position, fails to find the equalizer. In the first half he rejects Mina, saving with his face. Before the final whistle he makes 3 more providential interventions which save the result.
  • Oristanio 7.5. He improved considerably in the second half when he attempted repeated dribbles and shots towards goal. He also finds the momentary second goal, but canceled out due to Pohjanpalo's offside, with a foray into depth one-on-one with the goalkeeper. He makes a formidable assist for Zampano in the 37th minute: he burns the entire opposing defense and crosses towards the center of the area.
  • Zampano 7. He catches Augello on the counterattack: he comes out from behind him and scores the opening goal.
  • Sverko 7. First goal in Serie A: he scored the second goal thanks to an incursion into the area, with the ball at his feet, in which he took out the entire opposing defence.

The tops and flops of Cagliari

  • Pavoletti 7. He entered in the 72nd minute with the right attitude and after 4 minutes found the 1-2 goal with a header assisted by Augello.
  • Augello 5.5. He completely misreads Zampano in the defensive phase in the 37th minute and allows the right winger to enter the area and find the opening goal. He creates an assist for Pavoletti with a cross towards the center of the area.
  • Luperto 5.5. He doesn't close adequately on Oristanio on the momentary 2-0 of the Venetians but is saved by an offside by Pohjanpalo.
  • Mina 5.5. He was close to scoring the lead when in the 31st minute he violently headed the ball from a corner but was opposed by Stankovic who saved with his face. However, on Venezia's second goal he was unable to close on Zortea.
