Morgan Wallen’s big win at the Billboard Awards came just hours after he pleaded guilty to throwing a chair off a rooftop bar in Nashville earlier this year.

The country music star won Top Male Artist, Top Country Artist, Top Country Male Artist and Top Collaboration for his hit song I Had Some Help with Post Malone at Thursday’s glitzy ceremony.

The honor was a far cry from the legal woes he endured earlier in the day, when he pleaded guilty to two counts of reckless endangerment stemming from the incident at Chief’s bar in April, where he had thrown a chair from the roof of the sixth floor. bar owned by fellow musician Eric Church.

A Nashville judge sentenced the 31-year-old to seven days in an educational center for driving under the influence (DUI), two years of probation and a $350 (£277) fine.

Accepting his gongs in a pre-recorded speech, Morgan thanked his fans for their continued support.

“I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout my journey and, as always, most importantly, thank you to my fans,” he told the camera. “You’ve given me so much freedom to make the music I want to make.

“Whether it’s a song that’s similar to something I’ve released in the past or whether it’s something completely different, you’ve always just given it, at least given it a chance, and that’s all I can ask, and I just want to thank you for being that way with my music. I hope I can come back next year and take on more, but for now I’m really enjoying it.

Morgan was previously arrested for public drunkenness in May 2020 and disorderly conduct outside Kid Rock’s bar in the same Nashville district.
