As the first generation of his Optimus humanoid robots is set to begin work in some Tesla factories, Elon Musk has spoken about his hopes for the commercialization of his machine, as well as the target price range.

Optimus, the humanoid robot developed by Tesla, was first mentioned in 2022 by Elon Musk. The billionaire has always spoken about this project with great ambition, including when observers were perplexed by a robot having difficulty standing up on its own.

Over time, Optimus has improved and even if it is still not marketed, it should very soon prove yourself in Tesla factories. This is, in any case, what Elon Musk announced during the traditional call for actions carried out as part of Tesla’s results for the first quarter of 2024.

Marketing that could start soon

Regarding the concrete marketing of its robot, Elon Musk hopes for market arrival by the end of 2025. Firstly, it could be a sale intended for professionals, or even a rental. According to the American site Uberism, Elon Musk reportedly spoke of a mainstream marketing period between 2028 and 2030. Information to be taken with a grain of salt, because for the moment it is only an estimate.

And what about the price? The billionaire mentioned a very wide range: between $10,000 and $20,000 per robot. It should be noted that, for the time being, each Optimus is extremely expensive for Tesla. The company is reportedly looking to reduce manufacturing costs to around $10,000 per robot, including through mass production. It’s hard to imagine selling the Optimisus at cost price. The idea is therefore to continue to reduce manufacturing costs in the years to come, to make the robot more affordable.

A luxury product, like Tesla

Even if we see more and more Tesla circulating on the streets, which suggests that Elon Musk’s electric cars are becoming more popular, it will probably take a very long time for the same thing to happen with Optimus robots. Certainly, the humanoid is touted to be capable of performing up to 70 customizable tasks and available with a precision that allows him to play the piano, but not every household can spend nearly 20,000 euros to buy a robot capable of folding t-shirts.

However, we can bet on the fact that competition will mobilize in the years to come. Honda and Boston Dynamics are already working on the subject of domestic robots. It is undoubtedly one of the next big issues in the world of high-techbut until this kind of technology becomes accessible to everyone, we’ll still be folding our own T-shirts a few thousand times.
