Meat: the drop in prices does not revive purchases

The average purchase price of the fresh meat for home consumption fell by 3.4% in April 2024 compared to April 2023 according to Kantar data relayed by FranceAgriMer. It is especially in the poultry section that the prix decline (-4.3%), under the dual effect of the return of supply after the avian flu and the decline in production costs. At €8.17/kg, the average purchasing price of chicken fell by 6% in April. On the side of the butcher’s meat, the decline is less pronounced (-1.1%). The price of fresh beef is approximately stable (-0.4%), reflecting the cattle market, like that of fresh pork (-0.4%). The price of veal, on the other hand, increased (+3.4%) due to the low supply, like that of lamb (+12.2%), linked to the calendar (Muslim festival) and the weakness of the supply. Finally, we note that the prices of cold meats are increasing overall (+1.5%) with strong disparities.

Household purchases only increase in poultry

Still in April, we observe that the sharp drop in poultry prices is correlated with an increase of 8.1% in volumes sold, with in particular increases of 4.5% in chicken and 13.7% in processed products. In butcher meat, however, the time is still in decline, with -3.2% in beef, -15.2% in veal, -1.2% in pork. On the other hand, processed goods increased by 0.8% despite the 0.4% increase in average purchasing prices. In charcuterie, volumes fell by 0.8%

Year-to-date, the trend remains gloomy

Over the first four months of the year, the trend remains negative in volume for most products.
