If you regularly charge your smartphone at USB charging stations, you are taking a big risk. But Android has a solution.

It is strongly recommended not to charge your phone at a public USB charging station, such as in airports or train stations. Your smartphone will in fact be vulnerable to “juice jacking”, a hacking method which uses the USB port as a means of attacking your data. To avoid this, it is possible to use a “USB Condom” device which cuts off data transfer to maintain only electricity transfer. Although it must be recognized that, as Android Authority points out, the risk of “juice jacking” is rather low.

But soon, on some devices that will have Android 15, these may no longer be necessary! Indeed, Google is reportedly modifying the “Lockdown Mode” so that it has the same effect as a USB condom, by deactivating data transfer while the device is in this state. It will be possible to use the USB port without the slightest worry as long as the mode is activated.

Naturally, this will not necessarily be available on all smartphones running Android 15: not all brands choose to integrate each new feature on their own model. If you are planning to buy a new phone with the release of the next version of Android, and you want this functionality, remember to find out before…
