Germany-Denmark: interrupted due to the storm, the match was able to resume

Euro on hold! Due to bad weather, the round of 16 match between Germany and Denmark had to be interrupted this Saturday evening.

The two teams, who had been tied 0-0 up until then, were playing in the 35th minute when a storm began to set in over Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park. The match was interrupted for a few seconds after a lightning bolt appeared not far from the stadium. The players were gathered on the benches at the edge of the pitch for a while before being asked to go to the changing rooms.

Resuming after 20 minutes of stoppage

“Due to adverse weather conditions (thunderstorms and heavy rain) in Dortmund, it has been decided to suspend the UEFA EURO 2024 round of 16 match between Germany and Denmark,” UEFA initially wrote before specifying that it would make “an announcement on the resumption of the match in due course.”

Hailstones have since started to fall on the stadium pitch. About twenty minutes later, the players finally returned to the pitch and warmed up for a few minutes, before finally resuming the match. The fans, however, remained in the stadium during this interruption while several fan zones in Germany were evacuated.
