Wind gusts of 130 km/h, heavy rain and large hailstones: impressive images of storms in the north-east of France

Météo France had warned, when placing several departments on orange alert this Saturday morning: “particularly violent” storms were expected in the evening, mainly in the north-east of the country. Yonne, Meuse, Moselle… many departments are affected by severe weather. And the images, relayed on social networks, are impressive.

In Troyes (Aube), violent thunderstorms accompanied by strong gusts of wind reached the city in the early evening. Météo Express, a site specializing in weather forecasts, relayed on its X account (formerly Twitter) a video taken by a resident at the time of the storm, where the winds reportedly blew up to 107 km/h. Earlier, 130 km/h was even reached in Tonnerre (Yonne).

In addition to the rain and strong gusts of wind, there are also hailstorms. On the Info Climat forum, dedicated to discussions about the weather, a resident of the commune of Doulaincourt-Saucourt (Haute-Marne) shared a photo of a hailstone that fits almost entirely in his hand, accompanied by a caption “from worse to worse”.

As Météo Express relays, an impressive arcus, the name given to storm clouds, is now heading towards Lorraine. It was filmed and broadcast by residents of Saint-Avold (Moselle).

The storms, which were moving from south to north, even crossed the border and hit Germany around 9:30 p.m. The round of 16 of Euro football between the host country and Denmark was even temporarily interrupted due to bad weather shortly before half-time. He was able to resume around 10 p.m.

In its bulletin published on Saturday at 10 p.m., Météo France maintained orange thunderstorm vigilance in 16 departments: Yonne, Aube, Ardennes, Marne, Côte-d’Or, Haute-Marne, Meuse, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Moselle, Bas-Rhin, Haut-Rhin, Doubs, Jura, Haute-Saône, Territoire de Belfort and the Vosges.

Earlier today, a lightning bolt blew apart a massive tree in Augé in Deux-Sèvres. The scene was immortalized and posted on social media.

14 departments are still placed on orange thunderstorm alert for Sunday morning.
