An elite helmet but divisive on certain points
With a launch price of over €600, the Apple AirPods Max had better be big and before you spend half a minimum wage on it, you should know that this headset is positioned in a segment that is half the price. Now that that’s said, let’s see what makes this headset so special. First, there’s the design made with noble materials: stainless steel, anodized aluminum, fabric mesh. It’s pretty and it’s comfortable despite a weight which rises to almost 400 grams given the lack of plastic which has the advantage of being light.
As for the controls, Apple has chosen physical buttons, which we don’t mind, and a Digital Crown, the same as that of the Apple Watch but bigger. In terms of autonomy, Apple announces a duration of 20 hours with noise reduction and spatial audio activated and it is possible to push it up to 24 hours without these functions. It takes at least two hours to recharge. Finally, you should know that the AirPods Max come with a carrying case in which the headphones go to sleep. Some people see it as the WORST Apple product but let’s leave everyone to their own aesthetic considerations.
Sound quality at its best, but…
The Apple AirPods Max are flawless in terms of sound performance thanks to a pair of 40 mm transducers but also a motor equipped with two neodymium magnetic rings which effectively limit distortions. Without forgetting the famous H1 chip which allows you to enjoy a rich and detailed sound experience. Finally, like any self-respecting Apple product, there are exclusive iOS features such as spatial audio and a geolocatable beacon on Apple’s Find My network.
Let’s not forget that if Apple is a major player in the wireless earphones and headset market, it is thanks to the quality of its noise reduction which is at the same level as that of Bose. Using a set of six microphones facing outwards, we are cut off from all ambient sounds and locked in a world of silence where only music dominates. Finally, the transparency mode must also be welcomed since it allows you to hear around you clearly and intelligibly, as if you were not wearing headphones on your head.
