At about 6 p.m., the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of Lancaster County, including Lincoln.

The Weather Service said it was a tracking a line of storms in northwest Lancaster County moving east at 35 mph that could bring strong winds, heavy rain and penny-sized hail.

Storms are forecast to continue Tuesday night and into Wednesday.

The weather service is forecasting up to 2 inches of rain through Thursday over a wide swath of eastern Nebraska stretching southeast of line from Norfolk to York all the way to the Iowa border.

Lincoln is right on the southern edge of an area that could get heavier rain, up to 3 inches.

“Damaging winds, large hail, and very heavy rainfall expected,” The National Weather Service said in a social media post. “An isolated tornado can’t be ruled out, and localized flash flooding could also occur.”

The weather service said in a bulletin that the storms could bring localized rainfall of up to 6 inches to certain areas.

Lincoln is in an area classified as being in a “slight” risk for severe weather, which is second-lowest on a five-level scale.

Lincoln has been lucky so far when it comes to severe weather. With the exception of the April 26 tornado outbreak, the city has largely escaped the severe weather that has pummeled areas nearby with damaging hail, high winds and flash flooding. Omaha has been hit multiple times this year with storms that caused significant damage.
