Sudden deaths among Tunisians: A cardiologist explains the causes!

According to Salem Abdessalem, president of the Tunisian Association of Cardiac Diseases and Surgery, fast lifestyle, consumption of certain illicit substances and sedentary lifestyle are among the main causes of sudden deaths from heart attacks among young people.

In a statement to TAP, he stressed that recent years have seen an increase in cases of sudden death among young people aged 20 to 40, a trend previously observed from the age of 50.

Abdessalem attributed the surge to genetic factors, such as congenital heart failure and myocardial hypertrophy, as well as non-genetic causes such as infections and lifestyle habits, including the use of drugs, alcohol and certain medications without medical consultation, as well as stress and lack of physical activity.

He insisted on the importance of first aid, especially in the first four minutes of a heart attack, to save lives, and called for widespread training of Tunisians from a very young age.

On the other hand, cardiologist Zied Lahidheb proposed the use of automatic defibrillators as an optimal solution to prevent sudden deaths, recommending their installation in all public spaces.

Cardiovascular diseases, the leading cause of death worldwide according to the WHO, are responsible for nearly 17.9 million deaths annually, with heart attacks and strokes accounting for more than 80% of these deaths.
