HarmonyOS (Huawei) would be on par with iOS in China

For the first time since the launch of the new mobile operating system developed by Huawei (largely based on an Android Fork), HarmonyOS would have returned to the level of iOS in China in Q1 2024 (in number of devices sold during the quarter integrating iOS or HarmonyOS). If we are to believe Counterpoint, HarmonyOS would even be a bit ahead of iOS (17% market share versus 16%), but we of course remain within the margin of error. Shortly after its launch, HarmonyOS reached 5% market share, or three times less market share than iOS (15% in Q2 2022). In the end, the market share of iOS remained in the 14-24% range while HarmonyOS capped at 8% market share for a long time before taking off last year to peak at 17%.

Counterpoint dedicates Counterpoint: the market analysis firm recently announced that in Q1 2024, the iPhone was a bit ahead of Huawei mobiles (and more iPads are sold in China than Huawei tablets). A few weeks later, Counterpoint announced a reversal of positions for the same period. Strange all the same.

Huawei’s bet to rise from its ashes after the American embargo will therefore have proven to be a winner: the Chinese firm has returned to the level of Apple on its national market, and could even overtake its American rival given the prices charged by the latter. . Please note, however, that these percentages relate to sales and not the installed base. In installed base therefore, Android occupies 77% of market share in China compared to 19% for iOS (-1%), HarmonyOS having to be content with 4% (2% a year ago, i.e. +100% growth).
