2024 legislative elections: for Nicolas Sarkozy, “this dissolution could plunge the country into chaos”

the essential
Silent since the announcement of the dissolution of the National Assembly, Nicolas Sarkozy breaks his silence and expresses his concerns in an interview with the Journal du Dimanche.

His words are rare. His carefully chosen words. Silent since the announcement of the dissolution of the National Assembly, and the electoral agreement between the president of the LR Eric Ciotti and the National Rally, Nicolas Sarkozy finally came out of the silence in an interview with Sunday Newspaper. Here’s what to remember from his statements.

The dissolution of the National Assembly

Nicolas Sarkozy is surprised by the announcement of a dissolution of the National Assembly. “Giving a voice to the French people to justify the dissolution is a curious argument since this is precisely what more than 25 million French people had just done at the polls.” He believes that “this dissolution constitutes a major risk for the country as well as for the president.” And added: “For the country, already fractured, because this could plunge it into chaos from which it will have the greatest difficulty emerging.”

The LR-RN electoral agreement

Nicolas Sarkozy describes the decision of LR President Eric Ciotti to conclude an electoral agreement with the National Rally as “inopportune”. He believes that Eric Ciotti “should have submitted to the governing bodies of his party his conviction of the need for an alliance with the RN” and to offer electronic voting to members. Thus “the question would then have been decided calmly and incontestably”. Nicolas Sarkozy sees in the LR-RN agreement not an agreement but “an absorption”. He details: “Being the RN’s deputy is not an ambition but an acknowledgment of renunciation”. And to warn LR: “Allying with the National Rally today consists of putting yourself in the shoes of a young man of 28 who, if he succeeds, will not leave you room, and if he fails, will take you with him.”

Jordan Bardella

Nicolas Sarkozy is not at all surprised by the RN’s score in the European elections. On principle, he refuses to discredit Jordan Bardella and the RN. He believes that the far-right party has done “undeniable work on itself”. However, he highlights the inexperience of Jordan Bardella who would become Prime Minister in the event of the RN’s victory in the legislative elections. He “has never been in a position to manage anything” and “is under 30 years old”, notes Nicolas Sarkozy. “Can we lead France when we are so young and inexperienced? Every French person must consider this reality.”

Emmanuel Macron’s action

Emmanuel Macron occasionally consults Nicolas Sarkozy. He did not do so before deciding to dissolve the National Assembly. If he had done so, Nicolas Sarkozy assures us that he would have tried to dissuade Emmanuel Macron from dissolving. The former head of state recognizes Emmanuel Macron as having “great intelligence, an impressive work force and a deep knowledge of the issues”. He notes his results on the economic field.
