“I skip to TF1 to watch the match and I come across Marine Le Pen”: the delayed broadcast of France-Canada did not only make people happy

This Sunday, June 9, the French football team faced Canada during the last preparation match before Euro 2024. Several political events of great importance delayed the broadcast of the match. A situation which did not make certain Internet users happy.

The evening will have seen many upheavals. After the result of the European elections followed by President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement – the dissolution of the National Assembly – the broadcast of the Blues meeting did not go as planned.

Priority to politics

The first national channel has decided to extend election evening around the European elections. A decision notably justified by the surprise announcement of the dissolution of the National Assembly. Football fans had to be patient before seeing the first images of the friendly match from 9:32 p.m., 17 minutes late.

“We are not going to bother with a friendly match when there is dissolution”justified a member of the editorial staff of the French channel for The Parisian. “The news always takes precedence. And the main news is obviously the dissolution. So it’s normal to inform the viewers. The mistake would have been not to do so”confides another TF1 executive.

A first in 30 years

The conditions of this Sunday evening caused a rare phenomenon, reports RMC Sport. This is the first time since May 26, 1994 that a French team match has been broadcast on a delayed basis. This Sunday, viewers were almost 15 minutes late for the match played in the Bordeaux den, Matmut Atlantique.

“I switch to TF1 to watch the Blues match, I come across Marine Le Pen”wrote one of the Internet users on X. As reported Here isfootball fans also noted the fact that the advertising was very present despite the accumulated delay. “The least that TF1 can do is draw a line under the 15 minutes of advertising, traditionally reserved for half-time of the match and let us move on to the second half directly”quotes another user.

Ultimately a very disappointing meeting. The two teams parted with a goalless draw (0-0) without much spectacle.
