A group of 12 children from a leisure center were involved in a traffic accident this Wednesday June 5 in La Rochelle.

This Wednesday morning, around ten o’clock, a group of 12 children were hit by a car in the center of La Rochelle. Several injuries are to be deplored according to information France Blue. 32 firefighters, 7 ambulances and two SMUR teams were mobilized to take care of the injured.

It is in fact a group of 14 cyclists from the Bernard Palissy leisure center: 12 children aged 7 to 11 and 2 adults on bikes were riding at the corner of avenue de Coligny and rue Jules Ferry in La Rochelle when a car hit them. The group was traveling in the center of La Rochelle as part of a supervised after-school outing.

At least 7 seriously injured

Firefighters who arrived at the scene of the accident reported three serious injuries and four minor injuries in this group of 14 people. Among the seven injured children, two of them were evacuated to Poitiers, the first had to be moved by helicopter due to the seriousness of his condition and the other was taken to hospital by road. In addition to the young person transferred to Poitiers by helicopter, two children are in absolute emergency and the four others in relative emergency. The Charente-Maritime prefecture indicated that it had “activated the departmental operational center and mobilized all security and emergency services”. On A medical-psychological emergency unit will also be set up in a municipal room near the scene of the accident.

A yellow car caused the accident

For the moment, we do not yet know the exact circumstances of the incident but it was a yellow Twingo which hit the group of children, journalists from France Blue present on site. The driver of the car is an 83-year-old woman who allegedly lost control of the vehicle, he also added. South West. The Prosecutor’s Office indicated that she tested negative for alcohol and narcotics before adding that: “the cause of the frontal impact has not been determined.” The driver’s custody had to be lifted due to her medical condition, she was hospitalized and is not yet “hearable” according to the public prosecutor, reports France Blue.
