The only AOP sheep’s milk cheese from Béarn and the Basque Country, Ossau-Iraty invites all lovers, locals and holidaymakers, to come and celebrate all the richness of the AOP Ossau-Iraty appellation, on the occasion of the second edition of its Festive Day.
Emblematic in New Aquitaine, the Ossau-Iraty AOP Cheese Route brings together 125 stages this year, spread across Béarn and the Basque Country. All welcome the public for direct sales, most are open all year round and others depending on the seasonality of production. They are the best way to find an authentic cheese, to appreciate all its taste variety and to discover the passion of its producers…
Many offer activities at different times of the year (red stages): great experiences and discoveries guaranteed. Through meetings and seasons, we discover the pastoral dimension of the territory and all the know-how of the sector.
A festive day
This summer, for the second year in a row, around thirty stages of the Cheese Route came together to organize a festive day on Thursday July 25. The activities will be different from one stage to another in order to illustrate all the riches of the Ossau-Iraty AOP, with producers who share their passion for ancestral know-how.
In the program
– activities around the professions of shepherd and cheesemaker, sheep, the region, the mountains
– visits to farms, cheese factories or maturing cellars
– demonstrations (manufacturing, refining, etc.)
– festive meals, concerts or musical entertainment
– hikes in summer pastures or simple walks with the sheep on their path
And on all the stages, tastings and the sale of AOP Ossau-Iraty are planned! The stages participating in the day can be found on the detailed map of the Cheese Route, and at each stage a different program! Enough to diversify the pleasures.
