What we know about the overturned truck in Zaventem: a 54-year-old man died

The truck driver who died Wednesday morning in a road accident on the Brussels ring road was a 54-year-old man. This was reported by the Halle-Vilvoorde public prosecutor’s office.

The accident occurred around 5 a.m. near the Diegem Woluwelaan exit on the Brussels outer ring road. At this location, the semi-trailer, loaded with grain, partially crossed the median.

“The driver of the semi-trailer, a 54-year-old man, died instantly”indicated the spokesperson for the prosecution, Ingrid Moriau. “No other vehicles were involved in the accident.”

Fatal accident involving a truck causes significant disruption on the Brussels ring road

The prosecution appointed a traffic expert, a forensic doctor and the laboratory. The traffic expert’s initial findings show that the trailer hit the guardrail on the right side, causing the tire to come loose. “The vehicle then became unmanageable and began to slide towards the stony median of the highway where it completely overturned”he explains.

Due to the accident, the Brussels ring road was closed for a while.

Around 7 a.m., two lanes of the inner ring of Brussels were opened to traffic, while the outer ring remains closed to all traffic for the moment.

The accident still causes numerous traffic disruptions. Due to limited passage, traffic must queue on the inner ring from the Strombeek-Bever junction, which will add an additional 45 minutes.

On the outer ring, traffic jams are present from all four arms and on the E40 Liège-Brussels already before Heverlee.
