Moroccan royal family in mourning following news of princess’s death Lalla Latifamother of the king Mohammed VI. Aged 75, she died in Rabat after a long period of illness.

Lalla Latifanée Latifa Amahzoune in 1949 in Khenifra, belonged to the Zayanes tribe and came from an influential Amazigh family. His grandfather, Mouha Ou Hammou Zayaniwas an emblematic figure of the resistance Zayane against French colonial forces in the early 20th century. Additionally, she was the half-sister of the general Hammou Amahzoune, involved in the 1971 Skhirat coup against the Roy Hassan IIa tragic event that marked the history of the country.

Since August 2022, the princess suffered from health problems which led her to reside in France, Neuilly-sur-Seinewhere she regularly received visits from her son, King Mohammed VI. In recent months, her health had deteriorated and she chose to return to Morocco, where she died a few weeks later.

The royal office spokesman confirmed her death on June 29. Despite the loss, no national mourning was declared. The princess was buried quickly, in accordance with Moroccan traditions. Nicknamed by the Moroccan press ” the mother of the royal children« , Lalla Latifa left behind a legacy marked by her discretion and devotion to her family.
