“I knew time was running out”: he breaks down the door to save a septuagenarian from the flames in Montpellier

The fire broke out on Friday October 12 around 5:30 p.m., Allée de Bon Accueil in , near the Beaux-Arts. A young Montpellier man did not hesitate to take action to save a man trapped in the smoke and flames of his apartment.

This Montpellier resident was on his way to work this Friday, October 11 when he saw commotion around a building, located on Allée de Bon Accueil, between Boutonnet and the Beaux-Arts. He stops and notices that smoke is coming from several windows on the first floor and that the occupants are strangely trying to close them. He inquires and understands that the firefighters have been notified. But while thick black smoke dangerously invades the building and flames come out of the windows, one person is still trapped in their apartment.

“I managed to break part of the door before entering and extricating the old man”

“The neighbors were distraught, they were waiting for the firefighters within a minute, it was too late. I asked a resident to open the door for me, says this good Samaritan. I quickly went up to the first floor. I tried to kick down the door with my foot, without success. I could hear the old man inside who couldn’t open the door. I asked the neighbors for help and tools, but I saw that they were panicking. I knew time was running out. I hit the door with all my might, with object nearby. I managed to break part of the door before entering and extricating the old man.”.

Upon entering, he discovers the victim on his knees “covered in soot, collapsing”, delivers the one who still had his gloves and his motorcycle helmet. There were flames in the living room. The building was starting to catch fire. He was less than one, because the young rescuer for a day was also starting to have difficulty breathing. The victim, a septuagenarian, was transferred to hospital by firefighters.

The police investigation established that the fire was caused by an unbalanced resident of the building.
