    Traffic jams and fuel shortages

Hurricane Milton is now only about 500 km from Tampa, Florida. As it approaches, some of the residents of this town take the road towards the north, thus obeying the evacuation order that was issued to them.

In this region of the southeastern United States, more than a million people have been ordered to evacuate coastal areas. This exodus is causing traffic jams on the highways, not to mention that gas stations have started to run out of fuel.

The United States National Hurricane Center (NHC) called Milton a major hurricane catastrophic et dangerouswith maximum sustained winds of 260 kilometers per hour, which places it at the highest of the five levels of the Saffir-Simpson scale.

In a bulletin published last night, the NHC indicated that weather conditions would begin to deteriorate in the afternoon. But in Tampa already, early in the morning, the rain is falling, with the weather report showing a 100% chance of rain.

In this city on the west coast of Florida, Hurricane Helene left behind a quantity of debris that alone poses a safety risk as Hurricane Milton approaches. Helene, which ranked as the second deadliest hurricane to hit the United States in more than half a century, caused more than 200 deaths last week.

In its advisories, the Florida Division of Emergency Management specifies that the evacuation order also applies to residents living in a mobile or manufactured home.

Other counties, such as Clay, Desoto and Duval, are under an advisory: this means that, at this time, residents of these counties are not required to leave. However, the notice states that those living in an old house or a prefabricated house, or those living in areas with significant tree cover, should plan to take refuge in a shelter or a more secure location. In these cases, in fact, strong winds and flooding can cause considerable and dangerous damage.

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of Hurricane Milton.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center predicted that Milton, a monster Category 5 hurricane for much of its approach, will likely weaken but remain a major hurricane when it makes landfall late Wednesday.

Early this morning, central Milton was about 360 miles (580 kilometers) southwest of Tampa, with maximum sustained winds of 160 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Milton will cross the state of Florida from west to east and emerge as a Category 1 hurricane heading towards the Atlantic Ocean. The precise path of the hurricane remains uncertain, but meteorologists indicated Tuesday evening that the storm will pass slightly south of Tampa.

Faced with potentially catastrophic predictions, authorities implored citizens to leave their homes. Tampa Mayor Jane Castor noted that storm surges of up to 15 feet are expected, which would be high enough to engulf an entire home.

I can say this without any dramatization: if you choose to stay in one of the evacuation zones, you will dieindicated Ms. Castor.
