In search of resources to fill the budget deficit, the French government intends to tax airlines more. The government is considering hitting hard on air transport with a significant increase in the solidarity tax (TSBA) on plane tickets, according to information from the newspaper Les Échos.

Indeed, the French aviation sector expects to be taxed an additional billion euros as part of the 2025 Finance Bill (PLF), declared Tuesday 1^is October, one of his managers at the AFP. “Our information, which seems completely reliable and certain, makes us fear a taxation of the aviation sector within the framework of the 2025 budget, involving one billion euros,” indicated the president of the National Aviation Federation and of his professions (Fnam), Pascal de Izaguirre.

“Airlines are not able to absorb such a tax shock,” warned Pascal de Izaguirre, also CEO of the airline Corsair. “So we’re going to have to pass that on to ticket prices. (…) It will be to the detriment of mobility, to the detriment of the democratization of air transport,” he continued, referring to a profession “in a state of shock”.

This proposed taxation of 1 billion euros will not be without consequences on the prices of plane tickets departing from France, warn professionals in the sector. “If this project sees the light of day, there will be an impact on ticket prices,” warns Air France. According to the newspaper Les Échos, the amount of the TSBA could increase significantly, which will have an impact on the price of tickets.

So, for a long-haul business class flight departing from France, the tax would increase from 63.07 euros to 200 euros for flights of more than 5,000 km, and to 100 euros for those between 1,000 and 5,000 km. In economy class, the tax would increase from 7.51 euros to 60 euros for flights of more than 5,000 km, and to 42 euros for journeys between 1,000 and 5,000 km.
