In France, the next European elections will take place on Sunday June 9, 2024. Any citizen aged at least 18 years old, registered on the municipal, consular or complementary electoral lists will be able to vote. There are only a few hours left to register. But how to do it, and how to ensure that everything is in order on your side? We take stock.

On June 9, the French will choose 81 European deputies, out of the 720 elected representatives in the Strasbourg Parliament. That is two more than in 2019, during the last European election. To vote in these 2024 European elections, it is still possible to register online until 1er May, or with the form until May 3 at the town hall. But registrations remain open until May 29 or 30 for certain specific situations, such as young people aged 18 without a citizen census, a recent move, a recent acquisition of French nationality, or a recently regained voting right.

Who will be able to vote in June?

French people who are at least 18 years old on the day before the vote or citizens of another EU country who are at least 18 years old and have the right to vote in their state of origin will be able to vote in France. The main rule: be domiciled in the municipality where you wish to vote and be registered on the electoral lists of this municipality.

For those who will not be able to go to the polling stations, a proxy is also permitted. In this case, it will simply be necessary to give proxy to a voter registered on the electoral lists. The request can be made online, since a decree published in the Official Journal at the end of December, via the website maprocuration.gouv.fr. No need, as was the case until now, to physically go to the police station or gendarmerie to have it validated.

French adults residing abroad, and European citizens in France will also be able to vote in these elections.

To register and vote during the European elections, it is possible to do so via an online form, by going to our town hall or by mail.

“If you are already registered, or if you are a first-time voter and you have been informed by your town hall that your registration has been successfully completed, you do not have to take any action: your registration was automatically carried out by the authorities »informs Election Europa.

However, if a move has occurred since the last European elections, a new registration must be made with the town hall of the municipality of residence.

Another specific case: registering from abroad. For French people living in another EU country who wish to vote for candidates running in France, the site recommends prior registration on the “consular electoral list” at the French embassy or consulate in the country of residence. “French citizens registered on the “register of French people established outside France” are automatically registered on the consular electoral list, unless they do not register. oppose »he adds.

However, the person who resides in one of the EU countries and who is registered on the electoral lists of that country, will not be able to vote for the French constituency even if she is registered on the consular electoral list.

It is estimated that there were seven million “misregistered” voters on the lists for the presidential election in 2022. These are voters who have a polling station far from home, at mainly following a move, not having taken the time to carry out the necessary administrative procedures at the town hall or online. To check if you are registered in the right place, simply go to the dedicated page on the Service-public.fr website.

Once you have received your electoral card, you will need to go to the address listed on it, or find your polling station on this “Check your electoral situation” site. Polling stations are generally located in the town hall or another public building in your municipality.
