Inflation over one year slowed slightly in France in April, but it rebounded over one month due to the rise in prices of services, according to preliminary data published Tuesday by INSEE.

The consumer price index (CPI) stood at 2.2% as a first estimate for the twelve months to the end of April, after 2.3% at the end of March and in line with the consensus of analysts polled by Reuters.

Over one month, consumer prices should increase by 0.5%, as expected by the consensus, after an increase of 0.2% in March. INSEE emphasizes that this increase “would be due to the increase in prices of services, in particular transport and other services”.

The consumer price index harmonized according to European HICP standards, which allows comparisons with other countries in the euro zone, was up 2.4% over one year at the end of April, a reading identical to that of March. Economists were counting on a deceleration to 2.2%.

Over one month, the HICP index would advance by 0.6% after +0.2% the previous month and 0.5% expected by the consensus.
