She saved the life of a young woman who was the victim of a car accident, by pulling her out of the burning vehicle. Fabrilene, from Castres, recounts her heroic act with humility.

Fabrilene’s is a beautiful story. On April 19, in the early morning, she probably saved the life of a young woman who was the victim of a serious car accident in Dourgne.

That day, around 6:30 a.m., Fabrilene, 31, from Castraise and mother of two children, went to work. She is a caregiver at the Arcades retirement home in Dourgne. “I was late that morning,” she remembers. “It had frozen, I had defrosted the car, I was 10 minutes late than usual.”

A burning car

It was when she arrived at the accident site, on Avenue d’En Calcat, that she saw a man in a fluorescent vest in the middle of the road. “I saw him, and next to it, a wrecked car, which was starting to catch fire. At first, I thought he was the victim. But in fact, there was a woman in it. We quickly called the emergency services, and they told us that we had to get the victim out of the car immediately.”

The flames are already spreading. They get bigger, around the engine, and give off a lot of smoke. Fabrilene rushes. “I opened the back door first. I saw an unconscious young woman lying between the two front seats. So I opened the front door, took her by one leg and drawn.” Quickly, the other person present comes to help him. “She was a little paralyzed, I shouted at her a little, I’m sorry” says Fabrilene.

One of his young colleagues

Together, they remove the victim from the burning vehicle. “A third man came to help us carry it further. Then other people arrived, with fire extinguishers. When the firefighters intervened, the car was almost no longer burning.”

It was at this point that Fabrilene became intrigued by the victim. The young woman, 19 years old, is not unknown to him. And for good reason: it’s one of her colleagues, a caregiver like her, at the Arcades retirement home! She worked nights and was returning from her shift at the time of the accident, where, for an undetermined reason, she hit a low wall.

It was this wall that the victim’s car hit.

“I didn’t recognize her right away, we’ve only been colleagues for a short time. And then she had big bruises on her face. But she was telling me something. It was during the day that I understood.”

How did Fabrilene react so quickly? And wasn’t she afraid to intervene in the middle of the burning car? “I wasn’t scared. I didn’t think, to be honest. It was a logical reaction. I’m lucky enough to have quite extensive first aid training. Besides, let go -she with a smile, I can never thank my trainer enough!”

“Train yourself in first aid!”

La Castraise is aware that she undoubtedly saved the life of the victim, who today, according to our information, is slowly recovering from his serious injuries. “A member of his family contacted me to thank me. At work, colleagues and residents praised me for my composure.”

For Fabrilene, this is “a normal act.” But she also wants to tell people to train: “Train yourself in first aid, just basic training. It can be useful in any situation!”

Even if we are never really prepared for such an intervention! Fabrilene also admits to having had several difficult days after the accident. “At the time, with the adrenaline, it was okay. But afterwards… It shook me…”

We can say it without exaggeration: Fabrilene is a heroine.
