The editorial board of the prestigious American daily New York Times on Friday called on President Joe Biden to withdraw from the race for the White House after his face-to-face with Donald Trump, on the set of CNN, which turned into disaster for the Democratic president.

In an editorial published Friday evening titled ”To Serve the Country, President Biden Must Leave the White House Race,” the New York Times described Joe Biden as ”a shadow of a leader.” , after the 81-year-old president ‘failed his own test’, reports Euronews.

On Thursday, on the CNN set, during the first face-to-face meeting between the two presidential candidates, the Democratic president appeared several times overwhelmed, confused, stumbling over words, losing his train of thought on multiple occasions.

“Mr. Biden has been an admirable president. Under his leadership, the nation has prospered and begun to address a series of long-term challenges, and the wounds opened by Mr. Trump have begun to heal. But the greatest public service Mr. Biden could perform today would be to announce that he will not seek reelection,” said the editorial board, which brings together leading columnists.

After his performance against Donald Trump, members of the Democratic Party questioned Joe Biden’s ability to run for another term, but the main interested party assured Friday that he could “do the job”, thus receiving the support of two of his predecessors Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.

“Bad debates happen. Believe me, I know,” Barack Obama wrote on the social network X. “But this election remains a choice between someone who has fought his whole life for ordinary people and someone who only cares about himself… Between someone who tells the truth, who distinguishes right from wrong (…) and someone who lies like a tooth puller for his own benefit… What happened last night is not going to change anything,” Barack Obama stressed, calling on voters to vote for Joe Biden next November.
