The imperative of safety for all requires exceptional decisions to be made, no doubt on a par with what awaits us in the second half of the afternoon. The cantonal department concerned therefore announced in the morning that all public events, for which an authorization request has been made, are purely and simply cancelled from 2 p.m.

The list is long, it goes from local festivals, particularly related to school promotions, to the fan zone. The organizers of the latter were informed – they expected it – that the match between Switzerland and Italy, this Saturday at 6 p.m., like the next one at 9 p.m., would not be broadcast on the big screen on the Plainpalais plain. There, today, there are the flea markets and the Saturday market, which will also have to fold their stands within the imposed deadlines.

We are now clearly talking about a storm, against which the following precautions must be taken:

  • Avoid being outdoors during peak storm times.

  • Move away from any infrastructure that could be swept away.

  • Avoid bodies of water (floods) and places exposed to lightning (trees, pylons, ridges).

The three emergency numbers: 117 (security), 118 (disasters) and 144 (health) are recalled in the same press release.

Rescuers on the teeth

They will ring a lot. Everywhere, the staff in the alarm centers has been reinforced. The rescuers are on their toes, on land, in the city and in the countryside, as well as on the lake.

In fact, if the instructions are respected, the entire public domain will be shut down from the beginning of the afternoon. This should, we hope, allow those involved – firefighters, ambulance and police – to get to the point, knowing that the consequences of this extraordinary stormy episode can have a huge impact on existing infrastructure, not to mention rivers. , with obvious fears of flooding, and of course the entire Geneva vineyard.

In the air, we must expect real disruptions to air traffic, knowing in particular that a lightning strike on the tarmac can alone paralyze the entire airport site. Cointrin is already preparing on the ground to face the storm with coordinators on site. Contacts have been made with neighboring airports, in case of closure. But for the moment, no interruptions are planned.

Peak intensity around 5 p.m.

We must expect a succession of storms and very significant electrical activity, accompanied by rain in such quantities that we really need to prepare to stay at home and put an end to any outdoor activity. Umbrellas fly away in the storm, and those who hold them at arm’s length.
