The incidents which punctuate New Year’s Eve in Strasbourg each year began this year a few days after Christmas, well before the night of December 31, 2024, giving rise to several arrests, in a tense context: security on alert at the following the attack committed on December 20 in Magdeburg, Germany, while the Christmas markets in Strasbourg and the region attract several million tourists.

Following these incidents, the parents of the minors involved received a letter from the prefect of Bas-Rhin, Jacques Witkowski. If French parents were invited to seek help from social services in the event of educational difficulties, parents benefiting from a residence permit of at least two minors aged 15 and 17, arrested on December 26, 2024 in a neighborhood from Strasbourg, were, in addition, summoned to the prefecture. In the letter addressed to them, the prefect, appointed in November 2024, underlines: “In view of the seriousness of the aforementioned facts, I wonder about the respect of your parental obligations. Also, I plan to re-examine your right to stay on the national territory with regard to the provisions of article L. 432-5 of the code of entry and stay of foreigners and the right to asylum. »
