The RBFA, which did not respond to requests from AFP on Sunday, dismissed Italian-German coach Domenico Tedesco on Friday after disappointing results over the last two seasons, with elimination in the round of 16 of Euro-2024 and a recent poor performance in the Nations League.
Lopetegui, 58, is one of the names most regularly mentioned to succeed Tedesco, along with the French Thierry Henry, former assistant coach of Belgium, and Rudi Garcia, ex-coach of AS Rome, Lille and Marseille among others.
Between September 2016 and June 2018, the Basque coach had 20 matches without defeat at the head of the Spanish selection. An immaculate course (14 wins, 6 draws) which took La Roja to the gates of the 2018 World Cup, which Lopetegui had not yet played.
A few days before the start of the tournament, the announcement of his move to Real Madrid at the end of the competition had sowed discord within the selection and led to an ouster and a last-minute replacement, in favor of Fernando Hierro.
Sacked after 14 matches by Real Madrid, Lopetegui then bounced back at Sevilla FC with whom he won the 2019-2020 Europa League.
-These last two seasons, the Basque coach tried the experience of the Premier League but disappointed at the head of Wolverhampton then West Ham. The Hammers, 14th in the championship, decided to do without his services on January 8.
