Dean of La Roche-Derrien (Côtes-d’Armor), Charles Le Caër passed away this Sunday January 12, 2025 at the age of 96. With him, it's a familiar and singular figure of the commune which is leaving, to the banter of a real titi from Rochois.

He was born in the Pillory, the top drawer of the chest of drawers serving as his cradle. Like his grandfather Jean-Marie Le Caër – known as Jean-Maï kamb, the lame one, because he had been injured in the hip – his father was one of the last ragpickers in the city.

The cowherd worker had succeeded in

Charles Le Caër had first been a cowherd worker on the Kéravel farm then rented for the year for 100 francs per month at the Kermezen farm before leaving for an apprenticeship in Paris at the Simca garage, rue Saint-Severin, where he will obtain his CAP.

He then became head of the spare parts department and then car salesman at the Simca concession in Charenton.

It will also be master driver for a man who will open the doors of publishing to him. Until becoming a sales manager at Hachette with mass distribution, a precursor to the sale of books in hypermarkets;

Some 20 years of responsibility, while having a passion for raids: the Rochois will swallow not Jeep 72,000 km between Alaska and Tierra del Fuego in 14 months after a few trial runs in the Ténéré desert, along the Nile and in the Mekong delta. “After this long, happy journey, I came back to live the rest of my age in La Roche,” he said.

It was in a garden

In 1991, Charles Le Caër set down his suitcases and his imposing library at Calvaire, where he created a Zen garden, his happy valley with boudoir oriental to find calm and serenity. And to share its meaning with passers-by.

Every day there was for him amazement at Buddhist statuary, generous flowering and a remarkable view of the Jaudy valley. A garden protected by the fortified wall of the Penthièvre castle.

Municipal councilor

Its stronghold to now invest in the country. Self-taught passionate about literaturepresident of the festival committee and the heritage preservation association, “he was keen on Roch history and notably had knowledge of Tunodo, the dialect of the ragpickers from the lower part of the bridge. He was a man of the left, friendly and passionate. A figure from Roch,” greets Mayor Jean-Louis Even.

“He was a municipal councilor during my mandate from 1995 to 2001, he was pleasant to interact with and always had good entertainment ideas. For the transition to the year 2000, he had reconstructed the medieval doors that the storm had swept away at the end of December,” recalls Hervé Pondaven, previous mayor.
