From the Eiffel Tower to the Bay of Angels, from the castles of the Loire to the beach of La Baule, France is a movie set in itself. Some places were chosen for their fame, others acquired their fame after being discovered on the big screen. Would Saint-Tropez be Saint-Tropez without And God Created Woman and Brigitte Bardot? Conversely, the Palace of Versailles did not need Sacha Guitry or Sofia Coppola to assert its influence: more than 200 films were released there! Other places are inseparable from the legend of the Seventh Art. We cannot think of the boards of Deauville beach without mentioning A Man and a Woman by Claude Lelouch, and Cherbourg will always be associated with the famous umbrellas.
However, many of the filmings were carried out in locations different from those allegedly depicted. In 1987, Philip Kaufman found atmospheres in the old districts of Lyon evoking the Prague of Soviet repression for his adaptation of The Unbearable Lightness of Being, impossible to achieve behind the Iron Curtain. Likewise, the city of Carcassonne served as the backdrop for some scenes from Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood. Cinema is the art of lying.
When it comes to castles, fortresses and medieval cities, France has unique riches in the world, an ideal setting for swashbuckling films or historical dramas. Why bother recreating in cardboard what has existed for centuries? (…)
