War films are all the rage on Netflix. A few weeks after the publication of Messengers of warstarring Kerry Washington in a battalion of African-American women, the streaming platform has in its catalog Number 24 since January 1, 2024. Norwegian historical film released theatrically in its country of origin last month, it is inspired by a true story.
What is it about Number 24 ?
Signed John Andreas Andersen, Number 24 immerses viewers in Norway in the 1940s, in the midst of the Nazi invasion during World War II. The film follows the fate of Gunnar Sønsteby, an apprentice who decides to enlist in the Resistance from the first days of the invasion. This young man of character quickly rose to the rank of leader of the Oslo Gang group, an organization originally multiple sabotages against the Nazis.
Number 24 brings together a great cast, headlined by Sjur Vatne Brean, a renowned actor who has appeared in numerous Norwegian series, as well as the Netflix horror film Viking Wolfreleased in 2022.

The true story that inspired Number 24
You will have understood: Number 24 retrace a true episode of history. The real Gunnar Sønsteby was only 21 years old when Nazi Germany entered the war against Norway on April 9, 1940. He quickly joined the Resistance, and prevented the enlistment of many young Norwegians on the war front. the East by joining the Oslo Gang clan, and carrying out sabotage actions. It also infiltrates the collaborationist state police in order to collect information.
Wishing to help the British resistance movements, Gunnar Sønsteby crossed the Swedish border several times in order to communicate with the English embassy in Stockholm, at the risk of his life. He will also follow in 1943 sabotage training in the United Kingdom, allowing him to become a valuable ally of agents of the SOE, a British secret service, located in the east of the country.
Gunnar Sønsteby died on May 10, 2012, at the age of 94.
