The Swiss U20 national team has to say goodbye to the World Cup in Ottawa after a 7-2 defeat in the quarter-finals against the USA.

The U20 national team was able to keep up with the big favorites from the USA for just over 6 minutes. Then it hit for the first time. Brandon Svoboda put the Americans in the lead, James Hagens (9th) and Ryan Leonard (12th) quickly gave them a clear lead.
A few minutes later the highlight from a Swiss perspective followed. Nils Rhyn shortened the gap for the national team after winning a face-off. The special thing about it: The defender, who was loaned to Basel from Bern, scored when he was outnumbered (16th).
Another hit
However, the Swiss joy did not last long. Danny Nelson restored the old lead 104 seconds after the goal. With the score 4-1 after the first third, the game was almost decided.
As the game progressed, the USA increasingly exploited its superiority. Zeev Buium (28th), Hagens (46th) and Leonard (47th) ensured a clear verdict until the second break. In the final third, the Swiss took advantage of a power play situation – Andro Kaderli reduced the score to 2:7. It was to be the last goal of the game, the USA conserved their strength in the final third, Switzerland could not add more.
Safe to stay in the league
Switzerland can console itself with the fact that they have at least secured relegation with their victory in the last group game against Kazakhstan. However, it was clearly not enough for an exploit and the first win against the USA.
