It has been four consecutive years that the Spanish Super Cup has been held in Saudi Arabia. The first edition took place in 2020, but the COVID pandemic caused the 2021 edition to be held at the La Cartuja stadium in Seville. The Federation, at the time of Luis Rubiales, aimed to rectify a “tournament which embarrassed” certain clubs and, in doing so, to carry the mark of Spanish football to the rest of the world. This is why, after an “auction” with several possible sales, it was decided to bet on the Arab country.
The last office of the RFEF wanted to modernize a tournament which seemed exhausted during the last editions. For this reason, it was decided to play a four-way tournament between the two finalists of the Cup and the first two of La Liga. In a single-game qualifying match it would be decided who would be the super champion of Spain. Another measure sought was to remove it from Spain to accommodate the best Spanish teams in the world. “A celebration of football,” said the motto used.
After an “auction” between several countries, Saudi Arabia finally won the tournament. First in a three-year period (2019-2021)in exchange for a juicy sum of money for the Federation as well as a greater economic return for the participating clubs.
In 2022, there wereThe automatic renewal of the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia during the following triennium (2022-2024) under current conditions. To which would be added six other editions of the Arabian Super Cup, until 2030, in exchange for around 30 million euros per year.
