Two women lost their lives this Wednesday, January 1 in the Cagire massif a few hours apart. They went hiking and were both victims of a fatal fall in almost the same place. The mountain CRS warn of the dangerousness of the site with “very hard snow, like concrete”.

In view of these two tragedies and given the danger of the site, the town hall of Arguenos in Haute-Garonne has just banned access to the hiking trails leading to the Cagire peak.

“This is the first time. Access is prohibited until further notice. It is the state services which will decide when they can reopen”indicates Michèle Roux.

The order must be posted on site. It is also made public on the pocket panels network.

The mayor of the town still in shock from her two deaths in the territory of her small town. “I'm very sad. People don't realize that Cagire is dangerous. For them, it's not high mountains. There have been several interventions this season. Some go there in tennis. It's arrived again recently! But Cagire is dangerous in winter as in summer. People don't realize it.deplores Michèle Roux.

And the lack of suitable equipment was noted by the CRS who intervened in the two fatal accidents on January 1st.

The first accident in the morning caused the death of a 33-year-old woman. She had gone walking, accompanied by two other people, with insufficient equipment for this type of hike in winter, according to the CRS at the Luchon aid station, in Haute-Garonne.
A few hours later, the same type of accident, also near the Cagire peak, resulted in the death of a 46-year-old woman.
