Who says new year, says change. Established in July 2023 in the Grenoble conurbation (Isère), the Low Emission Zone (ZFE) will expand a little further from this Wednesday, January 1, 2025.

Indeed, after the ban on unclassified vehicles, Crit'Air 5, then Crit'Air 4 in January 2024, it is the turn of Crit'Air 3 vehicles to be invited to leave the roads of the 13 municipalities of the Grenoble metropolis.

How do we know if we are affected by the ZFE?

And according to a study by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE), published last July, the number of vehicles concerned amounts to approximately 46 000 throughout Grenoble.

But for motorists who are still unclassified, how do we know if our vehicle is affected by this new ban? The Crit'Air 3 class, i.e. the next banned, only concerns gasoline cars registered between January 1, 1997 and December 31, 2005 and diesel cars registered between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2010.

What are the sanctions in the event of non-compliance?

But there's no need to rush into changing vehicles right away. In the event of non-compliance with the ZFE, the Metropolis wants to be understanding, at least for the moment.

“An educational period without fines is in place until June 30, 2025 to allow owners of Crit'Air 3 vehicles to find suitable mobility solutions, in particular by requesting the support system offered by the SMMAG (Syndicat Mixte des Mobilités de l’Aire Grenobloise) and Grenoble Alpes Métropole”, explain the Métropole services.

It will therefore be necessary to wait until July 1, 2025 for the owners of the vehicles concerned to be fined if they drive on the ZFE. Even though numerous aids and exemptions exist, non-compliance with the driving ban or failure to wear a sticker in the future will expose drivers to a fine of68 euros.

What about the Crit’Air 2?

Obviously the next on the list are the Crit'Air 2. But this is not yet news. The Grenoble Metropolis has chosen to postpone the ban, initially planned for 2025, on light and heavy utility vehicles bearing this sticker.

“The Metropolis is also planning an “exit from diesel” by 2030 (ban on Crit'Air 2 vehicles, possibly only diesel) which will be the subject of a specific regulatory consultation procedure later,” add the services.
