Sometimes happiness and suffering are so close together. At the Super-G on Sunday in Bormio, the Swiss were in top form. 24-year-old Alexis Monney came third after his debut victory in the downhill on Saturday and his teammates also impressed.

A total of four Swiss ski stars made it into the top 6. In addition to Monney, who came third, Stefan Rogentin came fourth. Marco Odermatt raced to fifth place, Franjo von Allmen came sixth.

This Swiss achievement is very high. Especially since the race started with a big shock. After a good start, Gino Caviezel got stuck at the gate and fell badly. A horror sight. The race was interrupted and the helicopter transported Caviezel away. The Swiss was taken to the hospital by air to encouraging applause.

Rogentin told SRF after the race: “You notice Caviezel’s fall. You have to get the images out of your head for the first time.” He said about his trip: “Difficulties in coordinating the material also led to a slow start. Otherwise it was as I expected.” Teammate Marco Odermatt chose thoughtful words.

“Too much has happened this week to drive down here at full risk,” he said. And further: “Logically you try to hide it, but that doesn’t always work.” As a reminder: There were several falls during training on Friday. French ski star Cyprien Sarrazin had it particularly bad. The Swiss Joshua Mettler also fell in the same place as the Frenchman. Both were seriously injured.

Monney was just overjoyed after his fantastic weekend. He couldn’t believe his luck. «I don’t know how that’s possible. I couldn’t concentrate properly at the start and then I made a small mistake,” he told SRF.

And further: “I thought it couldn’t work like that and I had to go skiing. It was really good downstairs. I was able to run well. I don’t think I’ve realized what happened yesterday yet.” He doesn’t know what to say. «The year could hardly have ended better. I can’t find the words. It’s just great.”
