By continuing its demographic dynamics, Villeurbanne becomes the 3e city in the Rhône-Alpes region, in front of Grenoble (156,389 inhabitants) and just behind Saint-Etienne (172,222 inhabitants). This positive development also makes it the 16e city of France!
This regular increase in the local population is largely linked to the natural balance (births of Villeurbanne children greater than the number of deaths) and another part to the migratory balance with new households coming to settle there.
From 2021 to 2022, the city gained 5,200 inhabitants according to the latest figures from INSEE (National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies). These figures, taken from annual censuses, are those recorded on 1is January 2022.
“The City must continue to invest”
According to the same source, Villeurbanne ranks in 2e position of the cities of 100,000 inhabitants with the most dynamic population, just behind Montpellier and ahead of Toulouse.
Since last year's ranking, Villeurbanne has passed Dijon (159,941 inhabitants), Angers (157,555) and therefore Grenoble. It is neck and neck with Le Havre which only takes the 15e place only with 255 more inhabitants than Villeurbanne (population of 166,462 people). A ranking which should further evolve next year since Le Havre is in a continuous decline in its population unlike our city which has kept a positive pace since the end of the 80s.
For Cédric Van Styvendael, mayor of Villeurbanne, “ this is proof that our city remains attractive and that we must continue to invest. In 2025, these investments will focus on education, ecological transition with new parks, security and sports equipment. We are also investing to support the construction of housing, which we want to be affordable so that Villeurbanne remains a city for everyone, for young people, families and the elderly. ».
