People come there to spend their holidays, but also, and above all, to settle down there. According to a five-year report from the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (Insee), published on December 19, 6,080,731 people resided in on 1is January 2022. “Thanks to a strong migratory surplus, the population continues to increase rapidly, at a rate of +0.8% per year between 2016 and 2022, significantly more sustained than at the national level (0.3%)”notes the study. The region is close behind Nouvelle-Aquitaine, but remains far behind Ile-de- (12,380,964 inhabitants) and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (8,163,884).

In all, 45,000 new inhabitants are counted each year, thanks to births and deaths which balance out over the period. But it is migratory movements that allow Occitanie to maintain its demographic growth at a regular pace. Haute-Garonne, with 1,456,261 inhabitants, is the department of France, excluding Mayotte, where the population is growing the fastest with an increase of 1.3% per year. Hérault is very close (+ 1.2% per year). “By 2050, this department should absorb the arrival of 170,000 new households”specifies Caroline Jamet, director of INSEE Occitanie.
